Our inpatient unit

Our ten bedded inpatient unit is open twenty-four hours a day, 365 days a year providing treatment and care for people living with HIV. The unit is staffed by a team of doctors, nurses, client support workers, an occupational therapist and a physiotherapist.

Outside of working hours and at weekends medical support is provided by the on-call HIV Registrar at the Royal Sussex County Hospital. Each single room has its own bathroom to maintain the privacy and dignity of patients. All patients are referred to us by a health or care professional and patient stays can range from a few days to two weeks.

As the needs of people living with HIV are changing we are looking at developing our services to support people who are ageing and living with co-morbidities.

Who can be admitted to the inpatient unit?

Patients are referred to the inpatient unit for a number of reasons that can include:
• Support starting HIV medicines or restarting treatment for complex patients
• Medical and surgical convalescence
• Monitoring and maintenance of health when patients are experiencing declining physical or mental health that is impacting on their HIV
• HIV acquired brain injury for assessment
• Detox from alcohol or drugs that is impacting on HIV treatment and health
• Mental health and emotional support
• End of life care
We are not funded to provide respite care. For patients who require respite care please contact us to discuss charges and funding.

Who can refer to us?

We can receive referrals from doctors, nurses, GP’s mental health teams and social services. We are funded by the NHS for patients living in Brighton and Hove, East Sussex and West Sussex. For patients outside of these areas please contact us. On occasions, we can take urgent referrals.

All referrals are reviewed at a multidisciplinary team meeting held every Thursday afternoon and dates agreed for the admission of the patient.
You can make a referral here. If you have any questions about making a referral, please do not hesitate to contact us on 01273 694 222.
