About the opportunity 

The Sussex Beacon is looking to recruit volunteers to work in our dynamic charity shops in London Road and St James Street Brighton. Both our shops are open from Monday to Saturday from 9.30 to 5pm.

We are looking for people who are interested in volunteering in the retail sector and we will try and find a retail role that fits your skills.

Join our Team of Peer Mentor Volunteers!

Are you HIV+ and confident in living with your diagnosis and managing your health?

The Sussex Beacon delivers a dedicated Peer Mentor Service for people living with HIV and we are currently recruiting for new volunteers to train as Peer Mentors.

As a trained Peer Mentor, you can pass on your knowledge and use your experience of living with HIV to support those who are either newly diagnosed or in need of support.

As a mentor, you receive:

  • Accredited Training
  • Skills development
  • Knowledge through shared experiences
  • Connection with others living with HIV
  • Ongoing supervision and training as a mentor

Community Fundraiser (22.5 hours per week)

Are you a dynamic, ambitious and innovative individual looking for your next challenge? Would you like the opportunity to progress your career within a much loved local charity? Look no further! A fantastic opportunity has arisen for a Community Fundraiser to join The Sussex Beacon, a charity dedicated to supporting people living with HIV.

Salary: £21-25,000 pro rata dependent on experience.

We are recruiting a Community Fundraiser to identify, build and develop partnerships with community and business organisations and maximise the potential of individual supporters. We are looking for a self-starter with community fundraising experience or someone who can bring their transferable skills and experience to the post.

The role will include specific targets for raising funds through community and corporate fundraising activities. You will be part of a Fundraising and Communications Team, predominately working out in the community and will be expected to organise, manage and prioritise your own workload with periods of minimal supervision. The organisation hopes to grow this area of fundraising and is looking to recruit someone who is proactive and can develop the scope of our fundraising activities.

Volunteer Driver

If you are looking for a flexible role that gets you out and about meeting people this could be the role for you. This is a vital role helping to keep the donations coming into us at The Sussex Beacon from the local community. The role requires you to be available for one or two mornings or afternoons a month. This role would ideally suit two people working together (a driver and mate)

As part of this role you will be:

  • Delivering and collecting collection boxes/buckets to and from local businesses, pubs and clubs in Brighton & Hove and surrounding areas, and bringing them back to us at The Sussex Beacon.
  • Promoting the work of The Sussex Beacon in the community, and where possible, forming a relationship with the businesses for future support (raffle prizes, events marketing etc)
  • Full training will be given; you must have your own vehicle and will be reimbursed for mileage. You must have a full, valid driving license and an up to date MOT for the vehicle. Also, your car must be correctly insured for carrying out collections for The Sussex Beacon.

The Sussex Beacon provides specialist care and support for people living with HIV. We promote independence and improve health and wellbeing by providing inpatient and outpatient services.

You must be over 18 and hold a clean driving licence. The role requires a satisfactory Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check which is repeated on a rolling 3 yearly basis.
The role is also subject to satisfactory references and a trial period.
